At the moment Crunkstep is my favorite sub-genre of dubstep. Pulling elements from early hip-hop such as psychedelic synths and rolling basslines, then throwing in some of the illest electro-dubstep, it offers what I think is the best and most progressive sound in Dubstep today. San Francisco based producer Mimosa is the king of Crunkstep and is spawning a growing number of producers in the Bay area. Just recently he collaborated with Sleepyhead to create my new favorite mix. Its filled with nothing but unreleased tracks and personal remixes/refixes. This mix is worth downloading just to hear the songs I’m A Flirt (Sleepyhead Remix) – R.Kelly and Dirty Diamonds – Eprom + Sleepyhead > Twista Accapella. I played the latter last night on some amazing speakers and I was blown away, it’s got one of the trippiest bass beats I’ve ever heard in a dubstep song. Give this amazing mix a listen and check out Mimosa’s Soundcloud as well.

Give Me A Little Bit of Funk

For some reason, I think a lot of new British music doesn’t spread to the rest of the world. UK Funky or Funky is one genre that only exists only in Britain. I’ve been very intrigued by the sound of UK Funky; I hear elements of Dancehall Reggae, Chicago House, and all sorts of Latin music when I listen to it. The Latin aspects provide the biggest influence in my opinion; utilizing a Soca inspired breakbeat and brass horn stabs for the hook. The basslines are addictive and fun, they hop and jump along. Check out these two songs by Crazy Cousinz and Lil Silva to see some great UK Funky. I’m a big fan oof Crazy Cousin’z remix of T-Shirt. The bassline is impossible not to dance to and I love the samples from Shontelle. Lil Silva’s “Seasons” exemplifies the latin influence on the genre and is another great song.

At Play

Another Deadmau5 post! Caspa, founder and CEO of Dub Police – by far my favorite dubstep label – remixed the classic I Remember by Deadmau5. Take a listen and check out the song that I can’t seem to get out of my head! I feel like it should end a dirty disco or something!

Raise your hand if you’ve ever thought that Kids by MGMT could be turned in to an epic dubstep anthem. I can’t see any hands. This remix takes everything I’d ever thought about that song and throws it out the window – only keeping the parts we know and love. Epic.

At Play

Deadmau5’s recently released album Deadmau5 at Play Vol. 2 sees his return to canadian based label Play after spending some time at big gunz, EMI. Full of previously unreleased tracks and colaborations, this unmixed dj-friendly album already sounds as though it could be the soundtrack for Dirty Disco. Full of Deadmau5’s signature sound, I think this is the kind of release we were looking for from him. Its not as trancy as some of his older things such as ‘I Remember’ and not as minimal as ‘For Lack of a Better Name.’ It has the thump that we all love and very little of the cheese (no pun intended).

Check out Deadmau5’s most recent minimix which features a bunch of tracks from the new album.

calvinFor those of you who were expecting a live show from Calvin, I’m betting you were all a little disappointed when you found out he wasn’t singing. While there was minimal advertising for the event (not evencept a huge A0 poster outside the union like there was for Sister Bliss last year), what adverts were up did say “DJ SET” on them, so don’t blame the organizers for not telling you, cause they did, you just weren’t looking hard enough.

Beyond that, he did a great job. He got the crowd going (playing some of his own stuff) and for the most part, threw down a really well thought out and put together set including one of our personal favorites, Duck Sauce. So, before you all go ranting about how it wasn’t worth going to see, consider this: no one has ever gotten so many people into really good dance music in this town before. Yes thats right, the music he played was good. There I said it! And for that, I salute Mr. Harris.

This Is Really Funny

So Lenny Kravitz is old. I think we all know that. How old exactly though was kind of a surprise to me. He was born in 1964. More importantly, he has been making music for over 20 years and just recently released a 20th anniversary edition of what appears to be Let Love Rule with a whole bunch of stuff stapled on to the end. What makes this actually important though is that he got the kings of neofunk (Justice) to do a 20th anniversary remix of the title track (Let Love Rule). They even did a video to accompany the remix. Check it out.

Sick remix by Doorly of some random band no one has ever heard of. I love how this song is more progressive than the general ABC mold thats been around since before the Beatles. Stirs up electro, dubstep and jungle in to one nice little pot and serves it in just the right way so you can’t even tell what side is up by the end. Well done, sir

It took less than a day for all of the online tickets for Calvin Harris in Venue 1 to sell out. The number one question I’ve been hearing around town is “is Calvin actually coming?” I guess that question has kind of been answered by the Union earlier today when they started selling tickets but for those of you who are still unsure, I can tell you with absolute confidence. CALVIN IS COMING. I’ll see you all there!

Imogen Heap – Where Have You Been?

I have three youtube clips. The first one has very little to do with the second two. My question is: How did Imogen Heap go from soundtrack to the OC volume 3 to common dubstep remix? I’m going to be honest, I am a huge OC fan and even bought the box set for my girlfriend last christmas. That being said, I’m not sure the two should mix. Ever.
