Let me tell you about three young men named Skream, Benga and Artwork. They went on a magical adventure together. When they returned from this adventure, they were Magnetic Man – and so much more than the sum of its parts, Magnetic Man has so far released one track and had one top 10 single. Their fourth coming album is gonna blow minds and eardrums and if you’re anyone who’s anyone, you’ll be at their October 30th show in Sub Club, Glasgow. There has been quite a bit of hype thus far about Magnetic Man live shows. From everything I’ve been hearing, they sound like the Daft Punk of dubstep and drum n bass – using three computers to build original live renditions of their studio tracks. Skream and Benga have said they will mix in parts of their solo tracks as well. Dubstep mashup anyone?

This EP is what MIA’s horrible new album should have sounded like. The opening track, Sound of Siren sounds like an anthem for our scandalous, thieving, decision-regretting generation. The EP keeps going with tracks like Good Enuff (Cash Flow Dub) and Bruk Out (Buraka Som Sistema Remix) that could keep the party chilled for hours – in the best of ways.

Well its finally summer! Uni’s out, we’re all at home and moving onto a wonderful summer. To celebrate, lets bring out the booty bounce! Udachi brings us a great remix of “Freak Like Me” by Adina Howard. I was always a fan of the original 90′s classic and Udachi doesn’t fail to impress. Enjoy.

Picture this: a movie about the beginning of the west coast hip hop scene (death row records) featuring Will Smith as Snoop, Morgan Freeman as Suge Knight and for some reason, Chris Rock as Dr. Dre. The movie is directed by Michael Bay (the guy who does all those explosion guy action movies re: transformers). That movie would be amazing. Here is the music from the trailer:

Picked up some sick mashups from DJ E this week. Something that I think is really gonna start catching on more and more is mashups/remixes/originals that combine hip hop and dubstep. They’re two genres that honestly should have met earlier. This first mashup is a delicate blend of Mt Eden Dubstep and Wiz Khalifa titled “Say Dubstep”
Mt Eden Dubstep vs. Wiz Khalifa – Say Dubstep
And the second is a nice little blend of DJ E, The XX and Mims titled “Intro Like This”

First, an apology: At SaintAndre.ws we strive to keep up to date as much as we possibly can. Unfortunately, we all are students and are subject to deadlines and busy periods throughout the year. Rest assured, though, we are back and we’re not going anywhere.
Now, to the fun stuff:
Hope everyone’s break was amazing and all that it could be. A lot of people have for the most part, gotten over the fashion shows (scars healing, friendships mending, hangovers finally susbising etc) but there is one thing thats pretty much universally asked: where can we get the music? Well my friends, the time has come to talk of just that. Below is the music from both FS and DW with direct download links. Enjoy this beautiful ear candy and next time someone tells you St. Andrews doesn’t have a music scene, you show them these.

A lot of people have been asking me about a song I like to play right near the end of my sets. It goes something like this:
Rusko-Jahova (right-click download)
If you didn’t already know, that song is called Jahova and its by Rusko. It comes off of his not-so-recently released EP, Babylon Vol. 1. Its an absolutely incredible track that can blow the quilted jacket off of any yah any day of the week. Don’t believe me? Check out this video:
For those looking to experiment a little more with this track, here is the unreleased VIP version done by Rusko himself in collaboration with label-mate Caspa. Apologies for the poor audio quality – unreleased tracks have their setbacks.

Caspa just finished an incredible remix of How Low – that new single from Ludacris. Somehow though, I don’t think Caspa really understands what Ludacris means when he says “how low can you go?”
Caspa thought it was a challenge – and he gets LOW. If you don’t have any subs, get them. Got some? Turn ‘em up and lay back – enjoy the bass.

I was chatting with Dan today about how dubstep is getting a bit boring lately and it’s all because of the overuse of wobble. Let me preface this by saying, this only concerns “brostep”, where wobbling bass and messy basslines are becoming a bit too similar and repetitious. A full night of listening to this stuff is mind-numbing (in more ways then one). There have been a few gems recently such as “Wizard Sleeve” by Funtcase, “Foes (16bit Fuck Hoes Remix)” by Borgore, and the utterly mindblowing “Clap Your Hands (Dubstep Remix) by Drumsound and Bassline Smith. With Borgore’s “Foes”, the only reason I love it so much is because of the non-wobbly bit and the use of the old school gangsta rap synths. I want to share some of my favorite new dubstep tunes that aren’t drenched in wobble and hopefully open the genre to others who are turned off by the overuse.
First up, Apathesis, with his beautiful track “Untitled”. One of the best points of this song is how under-emphasized the bass is in the composition. Its use only adds depth and tension to a wonderful melody. This is a great chill track.
Apathesis – Untitled
Next is a new track by XI entitled “Slippin” and it excellently represents how dark themes can be incorporated without a massive wobbling bass. The bass in this song flows, disconnected by the breakbeat only to be stitched together again by the sythns.
Xi – Slippin
Starkey is up next with a amazing song off of his brand new LP Ear Drums and Black Holes (Everyone should buy this album. It is a musical masterpiece and just shows what can be done with dubstep.) The two pre-releases were “Stars (feat. Anneka)” and “New Cities“, both of which are amazing songs, but the one which stands out to me is “Fidelio”. From the initial moment this song starts it sets an aggressively restrained tone, creating wonderful tension and allowing Starkey room to fully develop the complexities of the melody. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Starkey – Fidelio
