you are what you wear

Just for a moment, think about what you would be if you were : a) what you ate and b) what you wore. I’m assuming that both answers will (in most cases) be grim. As someone with fashion and sustainability constantly on my mind, i think it is truly important to transfer one’s core values into their fashion and lifestyle. Above are some delightful designs via BOA’s hand-made, organic ‘Pamuk’ collection. This Istanbul-based brand is gaining global appeal (thus it is also relevant to all of us at st andrews), and embraces eclectic worldly styles as well as sustainability! Instead of describing them more, i will let you all look them up for yourselves on the internets. Still not convinced? I’m going to go off on a little tangent and leave you with some food for thought… Read more ►

Being Vegan: A Student’s Tale

A few months ago, I spent 21 days as a Vegan. For those who don’t know, vegans don’t eat anything that comes from animals (so no meat, dairy, eggs, or even honey). For a more in-depth description, see the video below:

Last Night’s Highlights

If you went out last night you were probably (at least for a little while) at the Lumsden Club Cool Runnings party at Ma Belles. The place was packed with people, and although they recommended Rasta attire, only very few people were wearing that sort of thing. The bar was clogged, the music was a little bit quiet, and very few people were dancing, but the atmosphere was decidedly pumped. People were waiting in clumps trying to slip past the bouncers when the bar was filled to capacity (which it did, pretty early on). If the objective of the Lumsden Club was to have an event where people could go and know all of their friends would be there, they did a great job. And besides, who’s going to argue when the stamp to get in is only 5 pounds?
People who didn’t go to Cool Runnings were waiting outside the Lizard. Once you got in it was full, sweaty, and all for contributing to your really messy night. Also the floor lights up, in case you hadn’t picked up on that. 40 was full of people waiting to go down to Ma Belles, and there was a party on Bell Street that had rented speakers from RaveSoc early on in the day, and they attracted a lot of people at the end of the night. Successful Boozeday Tuesday. See you next week.

Freshers Flu

During lectures over the past few days I think a lot of us have been hearing things along the lines of *achoo* *sniffle* and however you spell a cough. Seems like this year many more people have succumbed to the Freshers Flu than ever before. I’m here now to provide you with some cheap remedies for your ailments.
Sniffles: to ease the sniffling, use tissues often – if you don’t, the sniffling will get worse and can ultimately damage your hearing. To get rid of sniffles, use either cough drops, cold and sinus pills or chew some cinnamon.
Sore throat: One short glass of water and a teaspoon of cayenne pepper. I know it doesn’t sound like it will work, but it does. Gargle a gulp of the concoction for about a minute then spit it out – never swallow. Repeat until the glass is empty.
Cough: lemon honey tea. Cut a lemon in half and squeeze out the juices into a mug. Then add hot water until the mug is about 3/4 of the way full. Add honey until you can taste both the lemon and the honey equally. Drink while warm.
Overall cures: lots of orange juice and lots of grapes. Yes its weird, but the vitamin C from the orange juice is a natural cure and grapes strengthen the lungs. Good luck all ye freshers!
